Male Gaze

Brief

To design a typographic poster to communicate one of the key terms used in the debate on polarisation, place relevant words in such a way that their placement or presentation is meaningful through the use of a primary metaphor.

I came across this one artwork by Kevin Bolk who recreated the Avengers poster with the male super hero’s showing their asses in the way female superheroes are drawn, while reading about it I came to know about the term male gaze and I started reading

about it, and realised that the male gaze is a concept that originally comes film studies.

What is the Male Gaze?

In feminist theory, the male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world in the visual arts and in literature from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the heterosexual male viewer. In the visual and aesthetic presentations of narrative cinema.

I realised that different women have different reactions or ways to tackle this

  1. Some females choose to completely discard the male  gaze

  2. While some are trying to fit in the topic standards

  3. While somewhat turning down these standards that are created by society.

Overall, everyone has different ways and perceptions about the same topic; this can be represented by using Perception Bias.

Research

A report by Plan International in 2018 shows the imbalance in the ratio of male and female nudity.
